Pond fish require appropriate concentrations of electrolytes (such as potassium, sodium, chloride and magnesium) to carry normal respiration across gill membranes. The presence of salt in ponds has the added benefit of temporarily blocking the effects of toxic nitrite on pond fish. Pond Care Pond Salt is an excellent source of electrolytes for use in ponds.

Before making any addition of salt to a pond, the water should be tested for its existing salt level. Salt does not evaporate from pond water and is not filtered out. Thus, salt concentrations must be measured to determine the amount of an additional salt treatment, so that over-treatment or under-treatment can be avoided. Pond Care Salt Level Test Kit measures the salt content of pond water quickly and accurately for the maintenance of a healthy aquatic environment.

Directions For Using The Salt Level Test Kit:

1. Fill a clean test tube with 5 ml of pond water to be tested; fill to the line on the tube.

2. Add 4 drops of the Indicator Solution from Bottle #1. Cap the test tube and invert several times. Do not hold a finger over the open end of the tube, as this may affect the test results.

3. Add 2 drops at a time from Bottle #2. Cap the test tube and invert several times. Once again, avoid holding a finger over the open end of the tube.

4. If the water does not turn dark purple after mixing by inversion, add 2 more drops from Bottle #2 and mix by inversion again. Continue this process until the water has turned from colorless to dark purple, and keep an accurate count of the total number of drops added from Bottle #2.

5. This test is complete when the water in the test tube, after having been shaken, turns from colorless to dark purple. The salt concentration in the water and the amount of Pond Salt to be added to the pond is determined by using the Salt Concentration Chart found in the Salt Level Test Kit instructional insert.
