How does a Pond Skimmer function in a water garden?

As its name implies, a pond skimmer "skims" debris off the surface of the pond before it sinks to the pond bottom. This keeps your pond cleaner and healthier since you are reducing the amount of organic waste, or pollutants, in the pond water.

The pond skimmer also protects the submersible pump from becoming clogged with debris that collects at the pond bottom. This not only eliminates the need to wade into the pond to remove muck from the pump's intake, but also extends pump life.

How is water drawn into the Pond Skimmer?

In most applications, the pond skimmer houses water garden's submersible pump which pulls the pond water into the skimmer. Once inside the pond skimmer, the water usually travels through a leaf basket that traps large debris and then through a filter mat that removes even finer particles from the water. The submersible pump then moves the water through tubing to the pond filter and/or a waterfall or stream.

In-pond skimmers have a intake that floats slightly under the pond surface. The skimmer is plumbed into the water garden pump's intake which draws water through the leaf basket and then into the pump.

How is is a Pond Skimmer installed in a water garden?

A hole is dug next to the pond and the skimmer's level is set so that the water level of the pond is ¾ up the skimmer opening. The pond skimmer attaches to the pond liner by removing the skimmer's face plate, positioning the pond liner against the skimmer, then re-attaching the faceplate and tightening. The pond liner is then cut away from the pond skimmer opening allowing water to enter the skimmer when the pond is filled. A detailed guide can be seen here.

In-pond skimmers sit directly on the pond bottom and may require to be weighted down with small stones. All components are in the pond so the pond liner isn't punctured.
