Water Tints
What causes String Algae? String algae in ponds is caused by excess nutrient in the water and sunlight. Excess nutrients can be caused by an excess fish load, overfeeding, excess decaying organics along the pond bottom or by an insufficient number and/or variety of aquatic plants. How do I control String Algae in my Pond? Algae can be controlled by reducing the nutrient levels in the water and the amount of sunlight entering the water. Reducing the fish load, cutting back on feeding or cleaning the pond bottom will all reduce the nutrient level in the water. A good quantity and mixture of aquatic plants will also help control both floating and string algae. Submerged and floating plants are very effective at removing nutrient from the water while water lilies cover the pond surface limiting the amount of sunlight entering the water. Marginal plants also absorb nutrient and provide shade. For those of us who don't like to wait on nature, we offer pond solution products to provide quick relief for string algae problems in water gardens. These are time tested products which usually provide results within a few days in most garden ponds. |
