How to Build a Koi Pond

How to Build a Koi Pond

Koi fish require a deeper pond than goldfish, so size is the most important factor to consider when planning how to build a koi pond. Koi like to swim up and down as well as back and forth, and can quickly grow quite large. Having more than enough space is much better than trying to expand your pond later.

After you have planned out and sized your koi pond, it is time to shop for the appropriate quantity and type of pond supplies. Here's what you'll need:

  • Pond waterfall: We recommend installing a pond waterfall in your koi pond. This will keep the water aerated, and can also prevent the surface of your pond from freezing in the winter.
  • Pond pump: You will need a pond pump that is powerful enough to turn your pond once per hour. A 3000-gallon koi pond will require at least a 3000 gph (gallons per hour) pond pump.
  • Pond skimmer: Pond skimmers collect dirt and debris from the water's service to keep your koi pond clean and clear. The right pond skimmer will depend on your pump, so aim for a skimmer with a higher maximum and lower minimum flow rate than the pump you've chosen.
  • Pond filter: Like a skimmer, your pond filter will depend on the size of your pond pump. A biological pond filter has helpful bacteria that will help to break down chemicals such as ammonia.
  • Pond liner: Use Firestone EPDM pond liners, which are specially formulated for koi ponds. EPDM liners used for roofing can contain chemicals that will harm your pond.
  • Tubing: Be sure to use tubing that is the correct size for your pump and filter. If tubing is too small, it can restrict the flow of water. Spiral tubing is reinforced to protect against collapsing when buried.

Our site features a number of helpful calculators and guides to help you. If you want to be sure to get pond supplies that are all compatible and appropriate for the size of your pond, consider buying a koi pond kit. These come with everything you need to build your pond, so there are no calculations or guesswork to worry about.
