How to Make Your Own Pond

How to Make Your Own Pond

Making your own pond involves finding pond supplies that work together to produce a healthy aquatic environment. The size and layout of your pond determine which pump you need, and the pump determines which filter and skimmer you need.

Once you have designed and sized your pond, it's time to gather the right type and amount of pond supplies. Here is what you will need:

  • Pond liner: A pond liner keeps your pond water from seeping into the ground. Firestone EPDM pond liners are specially formulated for ponds and contain none of the harmful chemicals found in EPDM roofing liners.
  • Pond pump: Choose a pump that is powerful enough to cycle your pond water once per hour. A 2000-gallon koi pond will require at least a 2000 gph (gallons per hour) pond pump.
  • Pond skimmer: Pond skimmers keep your pond clean and clear by collecting dirt and debris from the water's service. The size of your pond pump will dictate which skimmer you need, and you will want to choose a skimmer with a higher maximum and lower minimum flow rate than the pump.
  • Pond filter: The pond filter will also depend on what pond pump you have chosen. Choose from mechanical filters or biological filters, as well as between submersible or out-of-pond filters.
  • Pond waterfall: A pond waterfall isn't just for pleasing sights and soothing sounds. It also helps to aerate your pond, and a waterfall can prevent the surface of your pond from freezing in the winter.
  • Tubing: Choose tubing that is the right size for your filters and pumps. Reinforced spiral tubing is flexible but won't kink or collapse when it is buried.

Our site features several calculators and guides that will help you choose the right pond supplies for making your own pond. Prepackaged pond kits are also available, which take the guesswork out of choosing compatible pond supplies.
