Summer Pond Care and Supplies
Following a simple summer pond care routine will keep your water sparkling for the whole season. We recommend the following summer pond supplies:
Daily Summer Pond Care
- Feeding: Koi are usually fed daily, but goldfish can last longer while they feed on algae, insects, and other organisms in the pond.
- Flow: Check that water is still flowing properly. Examine the pump and filter if you notice a drastic change in the flow of water in your pond.
Daily summer pond supplies: fish food
Weekly Summer Pond Care
- Trimming: Trim dead portions of pond plants, and remove trimmings so they do not clog your pump or filter.
- Testing: Test the nitrate and pH levels of your pond water. Early detection of problems are easier to correct and can prevent harmful conditions.
Weekly summer pond supplies: pond shears, pH test kit, nitrate test kit
Monthly Summer Pond Care
- Cleaning: Rinse out pumps and mechanical filter components. Do not use chlorinated water to clean biological filters, and also be sure they are not left out to dry. If you need to clean your filter more often, it may not be large enough for the size of your pond.
- Fertilization: Fertilize pond plants monthly to maximize their growth and color. Solid fertilizer tablets can selectively fertilize specific areas of your pond to avoid unwanted growth. Liquid fertilizer is a quick and easy way to fertilize your entire pond.
Monthly summer pond supplies: plant fertilizer
Summer pond care is simple, and you may even have most of the pond supplies you need.
