Why does that matter?

Well, when your fish digest food, they produce a number of gases, including ammonia. In small doses these substances are not harmful, but if they have the opportunity to build up they can cause some really serious problems. In addition, your fish's respiration process also releases gases.

During spring, summer and fall, these gases aren't really a problem because they can easily escape through the surface of your pond's water.
