Why Use Pond Heaters?

Why Use Pond Heaters and Pond Deicers

Pond heaters, also referred to as pond deicers, are one of the most important products you can buy to keep your pond life healthy and happy all winter long.

Why?

Because pond heaters keep a small section of your pond from freezing over during the cold winter months

Why does that matter?

Well, when your fish digest food, they produce a number of gases, including ammonia. In small doses these substances are not harmful, but if they have the opportunity to build up they can cause some really serious problems. In addition, your fish's respiration process also releases gases.

During spring, summer and fall, these gases aren't really a problem because they can easily escape through the surface of your pond's water. However, when your pond freezes over in winter, these gases can become trapped and start to build up in the water. If this happens, the water your fish are living in essentially becomes toxic, and it can end up killing them.

Likewise, your fish rely on oxygen to stay healthy. If your entire pond is frozen over, there is no way for oxygen from the air to enter your pond.

So how do pond heaters help?

It's really very simple. Pond heaters float on the surface of your pond and keep a small section of it from freezing over. They are not intended to keep the whole pond free of ice, but that's ok because all you need is a small hole.

Pondliner carries a variety of different pond heaters, so it's easy to find one for your pond. Remember that pond heaters are the same thing as pond deicers, so a product with either name will do.

As soon as temperatures drop low enough for ice to start forming on your pond, be sure to get your pond heater up and running. Your fish will thank you for it!
